Weekending it and a birthday shout-out

Disclaimer:  this is a LONG post.  it was a packed weekend.

First off, Happy Birthday Terri Mom!!! We love you (sorry your present and card will be late - daughter-in-law fail) but as a consolation it will be hand delivered by your son on Saturday.

She is the best Terri-mom that ever was!

So, at the beginning of every month (usually the last week of a month) I do all my monthly correspondence.  I sit down with my mail prep box and I write all our birthday cards for the month and any special holiday cards and address and stamp them.

I put little post-it notes on the front of the cards with the date of the birthday and put them by the front door.  This way I can easily grab the card on the way out the door and pop it in the mail a few days before the actual date.

This works great!!! Except when your birthday is the first day of the month.  For you few poor souls out there your b-day cards will inevitably be late because it jumped up on me too soon!!  SORRY

Now, on to the weekend.  It was jam packed with stuff and we totally exhausted ourselves and were totally unprepared for Monday.

On Friday night we headed up to Harlem to our friends apartment for our second Couples Club.  It was great.  We had yummy fried rice that Lynn made and smoothies for dessert.  We got to play with their doggies and the boys creamed the girls in Catch Phrase.

Saturday morning we dragged ourselves out of bed, Dan picked-up some donut motivation, and we worked together to make two quiches for a church service project the following day.  Around 11 we headed over to the park to meet my friend for field games and a picnic.  There were other families from another church there and Dan and I enjoyed kicking the soccer ball around and playing kickball with them.

The field was basically a mound of dirt we came back covered in it.  We washed up quickly and headed over to the local elementary school to help paint the mural that is almost finished.

Dan and I worked together on painting the pumpkin and Dan got to catch-up with a bunch of people there.

Afterwards we walked to 86th Street to get some new sneakers.  We were both needing new pairs and since our old ones were covered in dirt that morning we decided it would be a good time.  We didn't realize they were so similar until we put them on back at home.

After shoes we got frozen yogurt for an afternoon refresher and to celebrate our 9 month anniversary.

We headed home to rest and make two more quiches for a total of four.

That evening we took my friend Christy (who was staying with us while attending a conference over the weekend) out for Indian food and played Monopoly Deal with her.

Can you believe all that was in just one day??

Sunday morning we woke up early to deliver the quiches to the church office so the team headed into the city to feed the homeless had fresh food to deliver.  Dan dropped them off and we went back to bed for a bit and then it was time to go to church.

Every couple of months our church does a Missional Sunday which is where we go out into the community and do various activities that help people in our area.  This time there was a team that went to Breezy Point to help with Habitat for Humanity to continue doing hurricane Sandy recovery.  There was the team that went into the city to serve food and make toiletry bags for the homeless and the other teams stayed in Bay Ridge.  Families with young kids went to the local botanical garden to tidy-up the garden for summer.  Others went to two local group homes for adults with special needs.  Dan and I went with the group headed to Charter House to help plant flowers and have lunch with the residents.

Let me tell you, it was SO much fun.  The residents were all so sweet and joyful and funny!  We had a great time with all of them and plan to come back and visit.  The woman who manages the home told me about craft Saturdays which she hosts at a local church for all residents in the various homes.  She welcomed me to come anytime and make crafts with her.  I can't wait until the fall when this starts up again.

After our Missional activity we walked down 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge which has a street festival around this time every year.  The street closes to traffic and there are carnival games, fried food vendors, and other items of necessity for sale...like diabetic socks, junk toys, and bed sheets.  No joke.

We stopped to see the pizza eating contest at Rocco's Pizzeria.  There were four contestants and the winner ate 28 slices (that is three whole pies plus a few slices) in 12 minutes.  The reigning champion from last year only ate 11 slices.  Wimp.

It was so interesting (and disgusting) to see their strategies.  They ALL soaked the slices in water before eating it.  The guy who won (below) soaked his slices in Gatorade.  The water jugs were so gross filled with pizza water.

We made it home before the rain arrived and after a little rest time we did laundry and cleaned the apartment.  I made another quiche for dinner and we watched Finding Neverland in bed to end the weekend.

Phew, you made it through the post.  Happy Monday.
