On Monday we celebrated Ivy's first birthday with a simple family party at home. Similar to Kip's first birthday, we just did some fun decorations, a cake smash, and presents - no big party. Ivy was recovering from her first cold and had just gotten up from a nap so she was pretty overwhelmed by the whole spectacle, as simple as it was.
We had family join via Zoom for that classic pandemic baby birthday addition. So grateful for technology!
Mandy made Ivy's cake just as she did for Kip. And Kip helped decorate it earlier that morning! It was strawberry flavored and so delicious!
Later, Kip tried to help Ivy smash her cake but she was even more timid than he was about it.
Mandy gave her a strawberry and some cake on a plate and she was much more into that.
I wonder what thoughts go on inside a baby's head when they take in their surroundings? A bunch of cameras in your face, a computer with a bunch of faces talking, a weird hat on your head. All these different things hanging from the walls. A giant thing you're supposed to eat in front of you. Singing and people telling you to do things. Must be quite bizarre for them. No wonder she was overwhelmed.
After we sang happy birthday and gave up on the cake smash, we opened presents. Kip had been able to see and play with most of the big toys Ivy was getting ahead of time. This helped tremendously with jealousy and tantrums (thanks for the smart idea Mandy!). Plus, Kip had his own stack of gifts to open. Eesh!
We had a really nice and simple family day celebrating Ivy. She seemed to enjoy it and has been having fun with all her new toys since. Thank you to all the family you gifted to her so generously and made her day special.
