House Tour - Powder Room Renovation

Powder room or half bath? What do you call it? I'm talking about the bathroom on the main living floor that generally doesn't have a shower and is usually really small. Still seems so strange to me that we even have more than one bathroom to talk about!

Remember our main bathroom renovation saga? Yeah, I wasn't looking to do any more renovating for awhile but it's funny how updating one space really makes you see what else needs an update. The little half bath/powder room on our main living floor is our most used bathroom in the house since everyone tends to spend most of their time on that floor. The kids use it almost exclusively. When we moved in, the bathroom had the original fixtures still in place. A toilet, pedestal sink, and gold-colored light fixture. The toilet was old and gross and the sink was pulling away from the wall where it was improperly attached. I imagined the space updated and hoped we could do it soon.

BEFORE

It was old and dated but otherwise perfectly functional. We lived with it.

Cut to last week when suddenly, the toilet started leaking. Let's all get covid and have a plumbing issue at the same time!! Seriously, when it rains, it pours! We called a plumber and Dan and I went out and bought a new toilet and sink to get installed. We figured we'd start there and deal with a full renovation later. The plumber gave us a quote to install the toilet and sink but agreed it would be more cost effective to just do the renovation. I couldn't rely on the contractor being available so I booked the plumber who was supposed to come back the next day. Later that night the dispatcher called and postponed the work for three days. I debated whether to cancel and try my luck with the contractor instead. Fortunately, the contractor who did our main bath renovation called me right back and was eager to work with us again. His quote to do the full bathroom renovation (all new fixtures, install new flooring, patch, paint, etc.) was really reasonable compared to what we would have paid to simply get a new toilet. So we said GO.

It was a "small job" in his terms so we were squeezed in between his other projects and had just one of the workers out here for 2.3 days. And here we are, a relatively painless renovation! I didn't think there was such a thing!

AFTER

We used leftover flooring we had from our other bathroom project. Got the same wall paint, updated the fixtures to black matte, installed a medicine cabinet, and got a new light and mirror. The sink is properly mounted to the wall and the toilet is sleek. We are all really happy and grateful to have access to this bathroom again and thrilled it was a relatively smooth process compared to our last project.
