Things I want to remember about Kippy at 12 months:
- How excited you get when I bring you into our bedroom in the morning to wake up Daddy
- Family bed
- Started saying Mama and Dada and although it isn't consistent or frequent, it does seem to be with the right intention
- When you started to snuggle with me. It fills my heart so much and I hope it continues to develop
- Learning to sign "more." It's not perfectly formed but you are using it correctly to communicate!
- Sometimes at dinner you are already overtired and get a little sensory overload and scramble your hands in your food and fling it all over the place. It's a mess, but kind of cute.
- When you eat like the Beast (from Beauty and the Beast) and shove food in your mouth and smother it in your face and make a huge mess
- On our trip to Philly when I had to crawl into the Pack n Play with you to get you to sleep. You eventually passed out on my smooshy mom pooch. I would too! It's like a pillow!
- Your little tuft of hair at the nape of your neck. It's the only little patch of your "newborn hair" that didn't fall out. It's a little thicker and darker than the rest of your hair
- How you stick out your tongue when you are concentrating
- Your first ER trip. It wasn't fun but it will forever be blazed in my brain
- How much you love music and bopping along to tunes

Kippy! You really grew a lot this month and seem to change every day into more of a little boy and less of a little baby. This month you had your first big "spill" and trip to the ER. I learned a valuable first-time-mom lesson with that one...don't go to the ER if you can help it (woof - $4,000!). You have five teeth now with two more coming in. You are more brave with your pulling up and walking around (with assistance) and you figured out how to push the dining room chairs around like a modified walker toy. You aren't walking independently yet but cruising around with ease and confidence, still managing to get into everything!

You are becoming more expressive and vocal with your desires and opinions and are observant and responsive to commands. You "tantrum" when overtired and something is frustrating or taken away from you. This month you also learned how to sign "more" which is really helping us during mealtimes know if you are just tired or still hungry. You started saying more babbles and have said some words like Ma-ma, Da-da, and bubba (bubbles). I'm not sure I would consider any of them your "first" word but they probably are.

You had your first Broadway experience with Mandy and me at Broadway in the Boros. You went on your first carousel ride. We took a trip to the Jersey Shore and a weekend stay in Philadelphia! Your first visit to a museum, first cheesesteak, and your first overnight at a hotel! You also started snuggling this month which I just absolutely ADORE! You are living your best first summer life and soaking up every minute!

Sleep:
After the consistent wake-ups at 4 am last month, we cracked down on that habit with two days of sleep training. He is now able to put himself back to sleep throughout the night without pacifier assists from us. It's better for sure but we still have random wake ups for no reason from time to time. Kip no longer goes back to sleep if I try to put him down after we first nurse in the morning so, 5:30 is generally when we get up. Sigh. Sometimes he treats us to sleeping in until 6 am! This month we cut one of his morning naps in the hopes that it would extend the length of the others. It worked! He now takes two, hour and an half naps. The first is between 7:30/8:00 am and the second right after lunch at 11:30. He still gets extremely tired in the late afternoon but refuses to take another nap after 1 pm so his bedtime is still 5:30/6. The timing of his sleep isn't ideal but he is getting the correct total amount of sleep so that's what counts right now.

Eat:
Kip loves food. A little too much because he tends to shove his mouth with as much food as he can possibly fit and we've had to start some techniques to get him to slow down. It's getting better but he can get a little Beastly if he is super hungry. His favorites foods are cheese and carbs but he does really well with most anything. Nectarines seem to be his favorite this month and he has a new love affair with bananas (remember when we thought he may be allergic). Phew! We switched his chair from a booster to a Stokke Trip Trap to help him sit up better instead of slouch. Kip still nurses once in the morning and we give him a bottle in the afternoon and before bed. After this week my plan is to drop it to one bottle as a "snack" after his second nap and some milk in a cup at dinner. I hope to keep nursing in the morning but we'll see how long my supply lasts.

Play:
Kip is so deliberate and coordinated when he plays. I love watching him. He has plans for whatever it is he is doing and you can see the little wheels in his brain moving as he makes his way around the room working out his plan. He sticks his tongue out when he is concentrating really hard. This month he got really into pushing chairs and boxes around and he continues to love putting smaller things into bigger things. He loves anything with wheels or a flat bottom that he can easily push along the ground. He also loves chase. If you get down on the ground and say "I'm gonna get you!" he squeals in delight and crawls as fast as he can away from you. As with any exploration, he is also injuring himself more by bumping into things. It's just the beginning of spatial awareness.

This past month has felt really full and long and I am so grateful because it allowed me to really treasure this last month of Kip's first year. I still feel so bittersweet about my baby turning one year old and it feels like a major time warp that this year is already over. So many emotions and memories and a little sigh of relief that we made it! There is so much to miss about those newborn days but I'm looking forward to the year ahead and the blossoming personality that is emerging in this tiny human day by day. Happy birthday little monkey! I love you soooo much!!!
