Weekending it

Six years ago, this same weekend, I went to a fun corn maze in Queens with a group of friends from church. It was so much fun. Here I am holding our team flag.

We called ourselves the Barbie Dream Team because the flag was purple and pink. Good memories with good people.

On Friday I was googling places where Dan and I could find some fall merriment and that same corn maze popped-up. Let's go! I said. Dan, is always up for a day-venture and brushed off the fact that it would take a good bit of time to get to the maze via public transit and we would still have to get an Uber to and from the train station and it would cost more money than we should be spending. But we're reckless and we went anyways and we had a blast. Don't hold back from the things you may never get the chance to do again...

We slept-in late on Saturday morning and slowly got ready for the day. When I went to the corn maze six years ago it was COLD but this past weekend we had incredibly lovely weather. We didn't even wear coats! We got the Long Island Railroad around 12:45 pm and were out in Queens before 2 pm and then got an Uber to drive us to the Queen County Farm.

It was crowded. As is EVERYTHING in this city, especially seasonal things. We waited in line to get wristbands for the maze and then headed to the pumpkin patch to get some baby pumpkins.

The patch was overrun with parents trying to get that perfect baby-with-a-pumpkin photo. So I took one too!

I brought along the new bag that Aunt Judy and Aunt Kandi gave me last week from the Safari Museum in Chanute Kansas. I'll need to get over there sometime when we are back in Kansas. It was perfect for our day and held all our baby pumpkins nicely.

Then we waited in line for lukewarm apple cider and a stale half-frosted donut. I'm just keeping it real. All adventures have some disappointment...

Then we waited in line for the maze. They give you a little activity sheet and set you loose to find the various mailboxes throughout the maze which contain pieces of the map. Collect them all and you can find your way out. There was also a crossroad puzzle with other fun facts and clues. The maze is different every year and this year's theme was The Big Apple, so the maze was a huge apple. Every "team" gets a tall flag so you can be found if you are in distress. There was a DJ on the loud speaker playing music and telling corny jokes. Kids running around, ambitious parents pushing strollers through the maze, and then people like us. Everyone was having fun and the atmosphere was great.

Eventually we only had one piece left of the puzzle and struggled hard to find it, as did others, but the camaraderie was fun too.

We finished the maze in about an hour and had a great time.

There was a lot of other fun stuff at the farm like a tour of the farm house, a petting zoo for kids, food stalls, and hay rides. Everything cost extra and were mainly for little kids, so we just did the maze.

Fortunately the Uber driver got us back to the train station with only a few minutes to spare before the train into the city. We had no idea the train schedule so if we had missed it we would have had to wait an hour. Phew. It was great day and I'm glad we decided to go for the trip despite the time and cost. After all, we did marry adventure!
