Weekending it

Dan and I had a three day weekend over here. Those three days also happened to be the peak heat wave over in the Northeast. Holy wow it was SO HOT HERE. Like 99 degrees plus humidity.

Friday, wasn't unbearable like Sunday and Dan and I had already arranged to take vacation days and spend the day together, just us, in the city. Mandy always watches Kip on Friday so it wasn't a big deal to have her spend the day and then she spent the night so we could stay out late. Thanks Mandy!! Here's something cute from Kip on Friday.

For Father's Day I got Dan and I tickets to see the Yankees play the Colorado Rockies and then for his birthday I decided to gift him with the day and he picked some things he wanted to do in the city. So Friday, July 19th was our special day together as his combo Father's Day and Birthday gift. Our first stop was Gulliver's Gate in Times Square which is a model workshop/exhibit. It was really cool and not crowded at all. We loved looking at all the models of different cities. This would be a great place for elementary-aged kids if you come for a visit.

The detail on the models was outstanding and we really loved exploring everything.

After Gulliver's Gate we walked up to Central Park and enjoyed a fancy (re: expensive) lunch at Tavern on the Green. Dan and I normally eat really fast. We just do. But we forced ourselves to eat slowly and take our time in the AC. We did pretty good and shared fish and chips and a steak sandwich. Delicious.

Following lunch we walked over to the Boathouse and rented a row boat to be romantic and sweat profusely while we rowed around the sun-baked lake. So hot, but seriously, we had a good time.

We also learned that Dan is terrible at rowing. He can do the one oar canoe and stuff like that but he just couldn't get the hang coordinating two oars. So I did the rowing, backwards.

We stopped and got some frozen yogurt and cooled-off in the AC for a bit before continuing our trek uptown to The Museum of the City of New York.

Dan wanted to come here for part of his birthday gift. I've been to this museum about a half a dozen times but this was Dan's first visit and we stayed until closing and saw all the exhibits.

After the museum we got an Uber and went to Yankees Stadium for the baseball game.

It cooled off a little when the sun set but it was still really hot. We enjoyed the game and we even got to see the Yankees hit a Grand Slam! We left in the seventh inning.

We had a blast together, just like old times when we ran around the city nearly every weekend before Kip. Thanks to Mandy for watching Kippy for us. Maybe we'll make a summer tradition of it?

On Saturday our main goal was to beat the heat. We headed into New Jersey to the pool in Mandy's neighborhood. Unfortunately they didn't have any day passes for guests so Mandy very generously bought a membership to the pool just so we could take a dip on the freaking hottest day of the year. We all thought it was worth it and hopefully we'll get to go back before the season ends. Kip really loved the water and even played in the splash pad area this year.

We played at Mandy's apartment as well.

Sunday was torture hot outside. Unbearable really. We went to church, watched the baptism and headed home never to step foot outside again for the rest of the day. The weather will cool off this week, thankfully.

Now, you all know I'm a summer girl and I don't mind the heat. Truly, it's the humidity that made it bad and I will never live in the South for that reason. How do people manage that?

  1. The exhibit of cities looks so cool! I'm so glad you and Dan had a long day date! And the answer to how we survive summer in the South is Central AC (every house, every store, everywhere) plus ceiling fans and staying inside between 12pm-3pm everyday. :)
