Right before Christmas Ivy had her last physical therapy session at Leaps and Bounds with Ms. Lindsey. They had a super fun last session on Pajama Day with winter-themed activities. Ivy got a cute little certificate to document her graduation.
Ivy started going to PT in February of 2023 and attended weekly sessions for several months and then moved to every other week. By November she had closed her gross-motor developmental delay caused by her hypotonia. She can now run and jump independently!
Here she is on her first couple of sessions. So itty bitty and absolutely terrified of trying stuff out!
Ivy's hypotonia causes her to feel unstable, so running and jumping was scary for her to attempt at all. The PT sessions and focused attention Ivy received helped her to
build confidence. With a lot of practice and support, the growing confidence helped Ivy to try out the more complex gross-motor functions in a controlled setting. As Ivy slowly built the confidence and muscle strength, she was able to master the skills effectively. The PT didn't fix the hypotonia (it cannot be fixed) but it closed the developmental gap.
All we need to do now is make sure Ivy has plenty of opportunities to work on her physical stamina and practice those skills to continue building confidence. That's where ninja gym comes in...more on that later.
For now, we're celebrating Ivy's hard work and thanking Ms. Lindsey for her compassionate support throughout this year.
